On July 10-12, our Equine Care Programme Coordinator Elisa Geskou and Alkis Gkeskos visited Lindos, in order to do welfare assessments of the donkeys working at the Acropolis. The visit is part of the 2-day seminar that will take place later in the year, in order to educate the owners on donkey health and welfare.
In the two days in total, 52 donkeys were assessed. The donkeys were either gathered in the starting point for the Acropolis path, or were visited in their summer stables.
A great amount of information was gathered. This information will be processed and useful results will be extracted.
During the visit the team had also the chance to check the working conditions of the donkeys, discuss with the owners regarding equine welfare, as well as meet and discuss with local authorities about alternative ways of work for the donkeys.
We would like to thank the World Horse Welfare for funding the visit, as well as the Lindos Donkey Association for covering the accommodation, meals and car hire.
We are looking forward to organizing the seminar and to working closer with the owners. Our aim is to find sustainable solutions, with high welfare level, for the working donkeys in Lindos.
