NAXOS WILDLIFE PROTECTION

Our Local Partnerships Programme launched in 2021, with the aim of supporting and bringing to light the work of some amazing local animal welfare organisations across Greece. This year, we have chosen more small organisations to provide vital funding, and over the course of the year will give updates on the animals it’s helping. Our second Local Partners of 2022 are Naxos Wildlife Protection!

After discovering that sea turtles were being intentionally killed on the island of Naxos in 2014, a group of volunteers started working on protecting wild animals from the impact of humans, and Naxos Wildlife Protection was born.

The group now have their own facilities to hospitalise and treat injured and sick sea turtles at ΑΡΧΕΛΩΝ-Archelon, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece. Their primary objective is to protect sea turtles and their habitats in Greece through monitoring and research, raising public awareness and rehabilitating injured turtles who come into their hospital.

Naxos Wildlife Protection work with wildlife hospitals across Greece to rehabilitate and release all wildlife species. They work with local authorities to ensure laws are respected and habitats are protected, and inform and educate the public of the wildlife they share their island with.
