As a welfare charity we recognize that working equines have, for many decades, played a crucial role in agriculture and tourism. Where working equines are encountered all over Greece, we are here, through our Equine Care Programme, to ensure that they work and live under the best possible conditions.
We have been visiting Spetses for the last years to offer our services to a number of working equines. This year we received an invitation from the local welfare group “Spetses Care For Animals AMKE” (SCFA AMKE) to work together towards the improvement of the welfare of all carriage horses on the island.
SCFA AMKE, with the help of equine vet Fotini Emiri, have provided a two-year program for the approximately 120 carriage horses of Spetses, which included their microchipping and registration, vaccinations and deworming, as well as medical and veterinary support when and where needed.
On April 13, 2024, our vet and Equine Care Programme Coordinator, Elisa Geskou, visited Spetses and attended a meeting between the two organizations and the carriage drivers’ Union, where our Programme was presented and a number of questions were answered.
We are therefore happy to announce the cooperation between Animal Action Hellas and Spetses Care For Animals AMKE.
With this cooperation, we will contribute in achieving the maximum possible welfare for the carriage horses on the island. As an initial action, our equine team of vet, dental technician and farrier will offer their services to the horses and education to the owners.
We are looking forward to the owners’ response and feedback and we are optimistic about the success of this common action.
