GREEK CODES OF PRACTICE FOR EQUINES
Animal Action Greece were pleased when on 2nd August 2018 the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food issued a circular to Greek Police Authorities clarifying the ‘code of practice’ for the welfare of horses, donkeys and mules (Equids). This will help enforcement of welfare standards for animals against those who don’t abide by the law. We have campaigned for this for a long time, collecting over 12,000 signatures on a petition submitted to the responsible Government ministers back in January, 2018. This circular provides useful guidance to those seeking to report incidences of animal abuse.

However, we all know that the Greek Government is still to implement European Commission Regulations (EU) 2015/262, commonly known as the ‘Equine Passport Regulation’. We continue to lobby the Greek Government to fully implement the provisions of this EU wide legal obligation.
HOBBLING CIRCULAR:
On 14th May 2018 another circular was issued by Ministry of Interior and more specifically from the Police Directorate in Emoupolis, Syros (capital of Cyclades) via which they requested that the Police Directorate of Cyclades and all Police Stations in its jurisdiction conducted regular and substantial inspections to prevent the abuse of animals through ‘hobbling’. PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR HOOVES – LEAFLETS
Animal Action Greece has since 2000 worked in partnership with The Donkey Sanctuary in Greece. We are very proud of our long standing work together to seek to improve the welfare of donkeys and mules in Greece.
The Donkey Sanctuary has partnered with the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) to produce a new video and information leaflets under the banner of “In Their Hooves”. Donkeys and mules are put to work in tourism all over the world, whether used as taxis, for treks or to carry luggage. While neither The Donkey Sanctuary nor Animal Action Greece actively promote the use of donkeys and mules in any form of tourism we do understand their importance in helping thousands of people to earn a living.
We are happy to promote the use of the ‘In Their Hooves’ video and leaflets to encourage responsible ownership and tourism, and encourage other to share these. They are in both English and Greek.
