Sadly, since the summer wildfires and launch of our wildfire appeal, Northern Greece has been hit by storms which have caused devastating flooding in the Thessaly region.
Many shelters located near overflowing rivers were in urgent need of evacuation and volunteers have worked tirelessly to save surviving animals from shelters and villages in immediate danger, and relocate them to safety. Our partners, Dogs’ Voice, have once again set up their emergency station for animals in need of shelter and veterinary care, and have organised for trucks to transport animals from flood hit areas. The lack of access to clean water has intensified the risk to their health, and the team are working to minimise risk of disease contamination.
So far they have taken in 128 dogs, including 34 from the destroyed shelter in Volos, 44 from the severely damaged Farsala shelter, and 36 strays from the villages of Palamas, Vlochos and Astrita Karditsa.
The station is in urgent need of medications and other supplies to continue their life saving work. We have been able to rush vital veterinary supplies to Dogs Voice because of your generous donations to our appeal, which is now being used to help these animals affected by flooding.
