Our second Local Partner of 2023 is… Kalymnos Cat Project!
Kalmynos Cat Project began when volunteer, Leslie, first visited Kalymnos in 2015 and noticed the terrible plight of the many stray cats on the island. She had experience in managing large scale Trap Neuter Return (TNR) programmes to manage feral cat populations in small mountain villages in the South of France, so decided to start the same on Kalymnos. The organisation’s mission is to help the plight of feral cats on the island through education and sterilisation. Their volunteer programme focuses on TNR to manage the overwhelming stray cat crisis and educational campaigning to advocate for the change of mentalities to support animal welfare. Volunteers also care for the cats before, during, and after TNR. Once the colonies are sterilised, Kalymnos Cat Project provide food at organised feeding stations to help the cats get through the winter season when the restaurants and tourists are no longer around to feed them. Since August 2021, the volunteers have sterilised over 800 cats on the island!
We are excited to expand our sterilisation impact to another island and help support more Greek cats by spaying and neutering!
